The Grigia Alpina breed belongs to the gray breeds of the Alpine arch and it is certainly one of the oldest resident of the Alps. The origin of the Italian breed dates back to the strains present in the XIX century in some valleys of Alto Adige and Trentino, where the insulation of the valleys made genetic exchange very difficult and, consequently, all the breed’s features had been kept almost unchanged.
The only changes have occurred in relation to the environmental and breeding conditions, and partly to the selection activities pursued by few farmers who always believed in the qualities of this breed and improved its pureness.
Thanks to the fact that is able to adapt perfectly to the environmental conditions of the mountain areas, the Grigia Alpina has always been bred in remote areas
Currently it is widespread in the alto Adige’s high mountain areas and in Trentino’s and Bellunese’s Dolomite valleys where it is born, raised and butchered.
Its breeding is based on pasture which makes them a rustic and frugal animals. The meat has a strong and savory flavour.
